5-Day Danakil Depression Expedition

Depart Mekele early morning by 4x4 vehicle.

Drive through dramatic volcanic landscapes and dry deserts.

Arrive at Lake Afdera, a salt lake surrounded by mountains.

Visit the local salt miners and learn how traditional salt extraction is done.

Enjoy a swim in the hot springs near the lake.

Overnight camping at Afdera under the stars.

Drive across the desert to Erta Ale, one of the world’s few continuously active volcanoes.

Prepare for a night trek (3–4 hours) to the summit.

Camp near the crater rim and observe the molten lava lake glowing in the darkness.

Overnight on the volcano in a basic shelter or camping mattress under the stars.

Descend from the volcano after sunrise.

Drive to the Afar village of Hamad Ela, passing through vast lava fields and salt plains.

Stop for scenic breaks and photographs.

Overnight at a local guest camp or open-air bed platform (basic amenities).

Early morning drive to Dallol, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth.

Witness incredible colorful sulfur fields, acidic hot springs, and salt canyons.

Explore salt formations, mineral terraces, and natural sculptures shaped by volcanic activity.

Visit Lake Asale, known for its crystal-clear salt crusts.

See traditional camel caravans transporting salt across the desert.

Return to Hamad Ela for overnight.

After breakfast, drive back to Mekele with scenic stops along the way.

Arrive in Mekele by late afternoon.
